I’m Jessica, creator of process.ceramics. Some may see me as a guide or leader. I see myself more as a vessel holding space for you to embark on a journey of self-exploration guided by the experience of working with clay. The space I hold for you was molded by a life spent as a wanderer, a free spirit, an untethered soul. I’ve spent my years adventuring curiously, discovering the parallelisms between life's lessons and the process of creating.
My perspective is centered on embracing the humility required to create–accepting my experiences varied and intense, some pushing me close to the breaking point, some uplifting me, many transforming me with a new understanding.
My love of ceramics started at a young age when I attended a demo on making pinch pots at a blues festival in North Carolina. There was something about my hands moving around, over, through the clay – molding it, feeling it, seeing how it responded to me, that was novel. It grounded me instantly. My childhood was wrought with distrust, abuse, and trauma and the clay spoke to me in a way I hadn’t felt before...it just existed as it was, no pretext, no conditions, it responded to me in kind. What I gave to the clay was reflected back to me honestly, the clay mirroring my actions. It felt simultaneously predictable and wild. I knew at that moment that I was meant to work with clay.
Over the years ceramics have been instrumental in my working through traumas. But, I only recently realized that the process I’ve gone through could have benefits for others. The therapeutic aspects of working with clay are unique to the medium, but not unique to me. Through exploring how I could share what I’ve learned I came to create Process.ceramics – a celebration of living fully, exploring, wandering; curious, present, grounded, and fully immersed in the process. I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with you!
