Interested in learning about wild clay?
This workshop series is an ideal starting point for those seeking to reconnect with the land by embracing sustainable, local materials in their creative process.
Over the course of 10 demos, students receive a comprehensive exploration of wild, local, foraged clay, designed to inspire and inform their ceramics practice.
CURRICULUM
IDENTIFY
Wild clay is everywhere! Walk with me through my east Austin neighborhood and learn to how to spot clay in urban environments.
TEST
Learn how to determine if clay is suitable for creating by learning steps for testing as well as the key indicators of workability & plasticity of clays.
CLEANSE
Preparing your clay is vital to successfully create. You’ll you’ll learn two methods for cleansing impurities from your foraged clay.
prepare
Learn techniques and material options for preparing your clay for hand building and pit firing.
Adorn
Learn about natural glaze options with demos covering a variety of materials enhance your work.
Fire
Learn techniques for building a pit firing including considerations / common mistakes to mitigate.

This 1.5-day workshop is designed for intermediate ceramicists looking to explore the art of pit firing. Through 4 detailed demos, you'll learn the entire process, from preparing your pieces for firing to understanding firing techniques and exploring different options for surface effects. We’ll cover essential aspects like setting up a pit, managing the firing, and post-firing processes. While this workshop focuses on pit firing, it's open to all levels and provides an excellent introduction to this traditional and natural firing method.

We are excited to be leading a mini-wild clay retreat during the Rest Fest Yoga Retreat. This 3-hour demo will include information on how to: find wild clay, cleansing techniques, and hand-building with wild clay. We are excited to be participating & teaching Primitive Pottery demos at Winter Count, a primitive skills gathering. This event will span February 20-26 and our demos will be primarily focused on primitive pottery skills and methods for working with wild clay. This is a co-ed event.
